ARE Mission and Vision

Unitarian Universalist Allies for Racial Equity (ARE) exists as a response to a request by Diverse Revolutionary Unitarian Universalist Multicultural Ministries (DRUUMM), a UU People of Color Organization, for a group of white anti-racist allies to serve as partners in the journey of transforming our faith movement and our world.

Our mission is to confront racism in ways that are accountable to communities of color and by creating opportunities for white UUs to understand white privilege and unlearn white supremacy. Our vision is an anti-racist, anti-oppressive, multicultural Unitarian Universalist faith.

Our Commitments

  • Because we are grounded in a vision of an anti-racist, anti-oppressive, multicultural Unitarian Universalist faith, we commit to mutuality, right relationship and cooperation in the journey toward transformation and wholeness.
  • Because we understand that unlearning white privilege means accepting the leadership of people of color, we will be accountable to DRUUMM as partners in this journey. We further commit to supporting DRUUMM leadership and DRUUMM initiatives.
  • Because we recognize that white supremacy and white privilege must be confronted in order to make possible the multiracial coalitions we seek, we commit to supporting white UUs as we struggle together to use effectively our anti-racist power to help transform the Unitarian Universalist Association, our congregations and affiliated organizations.
  • Because we recognize that the journey to becoming an anti racist, anti oppressive, multicultural faith community is long, we commit to cultivating ongoing anti-racist practices, developing resources for a sustainable road to justice built on love, faith, hope, and courage, and including diverse perspectives in our work.
